Richard (Dick) Charles Hammer–1/6/2024

Richard (Dick) Charles Hammer died peacefully at Abington Lansdale Hospital on January 6th at the age of 84 after a brief illness.

Born in Pittsburgh Pa. to Richard F. Hammer and Mary Eileen McCann, Dick graduated from of Central Catholic High School in 1957. After high school, he earned a scholarship to play football at the University of Delaware. He took great pride in being a Fightin’ Blue Hen, often telling great stories of his teammates and fraternity brothers–he also liked to tell people about being in school at the same time as President Joe Biden. He also spent 6 months in the Army reserves and was trained as a medic (this must be why he always thought he was a doctor).

After graduating, he worked as teacher and coach in New Jersey before getting married and working in sales. Eventually settling down in King of Prussia and then later Montgomeryville, Dick worked as sales manager for Carnation and then Heinz before retiring. After retirement, he spent the next 24 years working at PineCrest Golf Course where he will be deeply missed by his friends and co-workers.

Dick’s life was shaped by sports and athletics, and he was dedicated to sharing his love of sports with everyone he loved. He was a passionate fan of the Steelers and later (and almost as much) the Eagles. But more importantly, he had limitless energy for his children and grandchildren’s athletic pursuits. Whether he was coach, referee, timer, supporter, and/or cheering section, Dick was a constant presence at his kids’ games, practices, and events. A lifelong athlete and runner, Dick participated in the Philly marathon and half marathon and later was a regular at the Lansdale YMCA’s weight room. He took time away from these activities to travel with his wife Perky, and they were lucky to visit Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and almost all of the United States.

He is preceded in death by his father Richard F Hammer and his mother Mary Eileen Hammer. Dick is survived by his wife Nancy Hammer, and his brothers William Hammer and Chuck Hammer (Valerie) and his sister Missi Timko. Also, his children Susan Truitt (Keith), Alison Weingast (Greg), Thomas Dancer (Marshelle), Kristen Foering (Michael) and Mike Dancer (Monica Flamini). His grandchildren Jackson, Natalie, Audrey, Sabrina, William, Benjamin, Mack, Derrick and all of his nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life (and memorial golf outing) will be held at PineCrest Golf Club in the Spring.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the North Penn Booster Club or Wounded Warriors.
