Robert J. Byrne, M.D.–11/4/2023

Robert J. Byrne, M.D., age 99, of Blue Bell, passed away Saturday evening, November 4, 2023, at Einstein Medical Center Montgomery.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Alice (nee. Thompson) Byrne in September of 2012.  Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on May 22, 1924, he was the son of the late John F. and Josephine (nee. Hankinson) Byrne. 

He served his country honorably in the Pacific Theater with the United States Army during WWII. 

Doctor Byrne attended the University of Maryland and the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine. He was on the staff at Sacred Heart Hospital and Montgomery Hospital, both in Norristown, and his specialty was Orthopedics. 

He later went into private practice Orthopedics for 24 years.

Dr. Byrne was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lansdale.

Surviving are his son Robert J. Byrne, Jr., and his wife Bea, of Idaho, and sister Theresa Thomas of Portland, Oregon, as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents he is preceded by his daughter Sharon T. McGowan, son Baby Joseph, and sisters Mary Durr and Catherine Wilmot.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM on Monday, November 13, 2023, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 51 Lansdale Ave, Lansdale, PA 19446, where his family will receive friends in Church from 9:30 to 10:15 AM in Church, prior to Mass.

Interment will be on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at St. Lawrence Cemetery in Brewster, New York.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Robert’s name can be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 601 Maiden Choice Lane, Catonsville, MD  21228 in memory of his parents, John and Josephine Byrne.

  1. The board and staff at Wissahickon Trails were very sad to learn of Dr. Byrne’s death. He was affectionately referred to as “the good doctor” by staff and board who knew him. He donated to Wissahickon Trails the 16-acre farm where he raised his family. A brilliant mind and delightful storyteller.
