Harold Bassinger—4/16/2017

Harold J. Bassinger passed away peacefully on April 16, 2017 at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center.  He was 92 years old.

He was preceeded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Eleanor (Berosh) Bassinger.

Harold was born in Salinas, Ca., but resided in Lansdale for most of his life after relocating to this area following his discharge from the U.S Navy after WWII. His wartime service included an assignment in Pearl Harbor aboard the USS Dobbin on December 7, 1941. Other assignments included campaigns in the Mariana Islands, Okinawa, and Liberation of the Philippine Islands. Harold’s experiences during the war are chronicled in the Veterans History Project of the American Folklife Center, Library of Congress.

After the war he worked for many years as a masonry contractor in the Lansdale area. In 2013 he moved to the Southeastern Veterans Center in Spring City, PA, where he enjoyed working on projects in the wood shop and regaling residents and staff with his quick wit and humerous anecdotes.

Harold is survived by his sister Judy Criswell of Philadelphia, PA and brother Donald Hooper of Daly City, CA as well as Daughters Carol and Nancy and Sons Harold, Jr., James and Thomas and 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A Viewing is scheduled between 10 and 11 AM at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, 900 Sumneytown Pike, Lansdale, PA 19446 followed by Harold’s Funeral Mass at 11 AM. Interment will follow at Saint Ann Cemetery in Phoenixville, PA.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association at www.heart.org or American Lung Association at www.lung.org.
